To Be Human

The distance between feeling something and being able to say so.

To Be Human is a short, quiet piece — the kind that earns its ending in the last few lines instead of announcing it up front. It sits at the softer end of what I do: less invention, more interior.

"He kept the feeling in a drawer he didn't have the word for."

It's here because the science-fiction instinct and the human one are the same instinct. This is the proof of the second.
